The sixth (optional) step is to use color to highlight repeated words and continuing or contrasting themes.

Highlighting Repeated & Related Words

It is not mandatory, but it is often helpful to highlight common themes in the same color. This enables you to see repeated words or themes at a glance. Sometimes, repeated words and themes, and how the author develops them, are the key to understanding the passage. If there is more than one repeated word or theme, use different colors.
